Favorite Quotes:
+Dorothy: What an idiot! Of all the lamebrained, moronic dopes. If ever I wanted to reach right through the phone and strangle somebody. Sophia: Not really a morning person, are you, pussycat?+Dorothy: He’s a week late with the menu, now he tells me that he’s going to serve wild duck and crayfish. They come from the wetlands. It’s like holding a Save the Whales function on a Japanese trawler.
+Sophia: So after I had my prescription filled, I went to up to Geriatrics and sang “Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better.” What a tough crowd. They threw Jell-O at me. If you could call that throwing.
+Rose: There’s plenty I can do. Like, sit around the house for the next 72 hours, scared to death he’s gonna tell me I have something that’s gonna kill me. How am I gonna do that, Blanche? How am I gonna get through the next three days?
+Blanche: Rose, what were you doing out so early this morning?
Rose: I couldn’t sleep so I went for a spin last night. To Alabama. Blanche, do you know at a truck stop in Tuscaloosa they have an egg dish named after you. (Yes they were prepared overeasy).
+Rose: I’m tired of pretending I feel OK so you won’t say “Take it easy.” And I’m tired of you saying “Take it easy” ’cause you’re afraid I’m gonna fall apart.
+Rose: Why is this happening to me? I mean… this isn’t supposed to happen to people like me. You must have gone to bed with hundreds of men. All I had was one innocent operation.
Summary:
Dorothy is upset with the caterer for the wetlands banquet. Somehow the discussion turns into a story about all the places Blanche has thought she’s made love. Dorothy asks for the girls to help with her fundraiser, but everyone is busy. Rose gets a letter from St. Luke’s Hospital. They have asked her to come in for some tests. She had gallbladder surgery there six years ago. Dorothy takes a closer look. The letter says Rose got a blood transfusion and it could have been contaminated with HIV antibodies. Rose freaks out. Dorothy tries to calm her down and reminds her it’s just a precaution, nothing is certain. For Dorothy’s fundraiser, they float the idea of a celebrity auction. It’s also the day of Rose’s blood test. She asks if anyone wants to drive her but it’s three hours away. Rose is very upset about this test, already worried about the results and negatively bad news will affect her life. When the check in nurse encourages her to use a fake name, it becomes even more real. She uses Dorothy’s name. She tells a St. Olaf story. Blanche tries to calm her. She shares with her that she has had herself tested too. Rose finally gets her blood drawn and a doctor speaks with her. She’s horrified to learn that she will have to wait for 72 hours to get results. The next morning Rose walks in. She couldn’t sleep and drove all the way to Alabama. Rose decides she doesn’t want her results. They discuss the celebrity auction. Not everything has been received. Rose is still worried. Blanche offers to take her to dinner and a movie to take her mind off it. Tensions begin to rise around the house. Sophia is now using Blanche’s bathroom. Mugs are now marked with an R. The stigma and the science are discussed. Later, Rose is upset at herself for winding up in the hospital with her gallbladder problem. As time ticks down, Rose and Blanche get into a bit of a fight. Rose doesn’t understand how she is in this situation when Blanche has slept with more men than they can count. It’s the last day. All agree to stick with Rose no matter what. They try to distract themselves from worry with the fundraiser, it’s still a struggle. Rose tries to give Dorothy a boost on it, but it doesn’t help. They wind up discussing their high school experiences instead. It’s time for Rose’s results. Everyone goes with her. The doctor tells her it’s negative, she does not have HIV. Rose wants to go to the fundraiser to celebrate. Sophia never sent the invitations though.
