Original Air Date: February 12, 1990
Favorite Quotes:
+Dorothy: Ma, just because you don’t like the woman doesn’t mean that we have to embarrass ourselves in public.+Blanche: Listen, I know one of the judges. Just keep telling the little bald guy he’s been naughty.
+Blanche: He wasn’t shopping, Dorothy. He was undressing me with his eyes. That handsome young man is obviously smitten.
+Blanche: I’ve been involved in these fatal attractions before. I can handle this.
+Blanche: Then I find out that the only man I ever loved cheated on me. On me! Oh, I could just die.
+Sophia: I never actually met her, but I heard she was a short, scrawny, birdlike thing who never shut up. I guess variety is the spice of life.
+Rose: My Charlie never cheated on me. I think it was because the divorce laws were so stringent in St. Olaf. The wife gets to keep everything that doesn’t ferment.
+Sophia: Time has taken its toll on Gladys. She’s not the fierce competitor she once was. For the talent section she was supposed to do a medley from The Fantasticks. She started with “Try To Remember,” and she couldn’t.
Summary:
Sophia tells Dorothy she is pretty. Dorothy is instantly suspicious. Sophia wants her to participate in the Shady Pines mother-daughter beauty pageant. Sophia wants to one up Gladys Goldfine. Sophia lays on a lot of guilt. Dorothy gives in and agrees to do it. They get interrupted by the doorbell. A David Pattern is looking for George Devereaux. He is surprised when Blanche informs her he passed away a few years ago. He makes an excuse about encyclopedias and makes his leave. They wonder why he didn’t try to sell them any encyclopedias. Another day, and Blanche is concerned. She saw the same guy who came looking for husband in the grocery store and he seemed to be following her. She thinks he has a thing for her. Dorothy is very concerned. Meanwhile, Sophia has found matching outfits for the pageant. Dorothy is horrified by the outfits. Dorothy and Rose talk about pageant nightmares. Blanche joins them. She tells them that David is parked outside again. She decides to take matters into her own hands and ask him directly. But he’s already at the door. She confronts him, but tells her he is not in love with her. He tells her, “George Devereaux, your husband, was my father.” Blanche, understandably, flips out. He tells her how he found out who his father was and that had he known he had passed away he would not have come at all. But he asks if she will tell him a little bit about his father who he thought died before he was born. Blanche is heartbroken. The entire time she was married to George no matter how tempted she was she did not cheat on him. She cannot process that he cheated on her. Blanche goes back through her diaries to around the time period when this affair would have happened. She finds she was gifted a pair of diamond earrings from George in March of 1967. He just came back from a trip to Dallas. Another day and Sophia and Dorothy are preparing for the performance part of the Shady Pines pageant. They are Sonny and Cher. They sing “I Got You Babe.” It leads Rose to tell a St. Olaf story. Blanche mistakes the pair for Cheech and Chong. It’s another evening and everyone is getting ready to leave for the pageant. But David arrives. Blanche stays. David apologizes to Blanche for the pain that his revelation has caused her. He asks if George ever went fishing. She shows him pictures of George. There is one of him fishing and Blanche gives this picture to David. Everyone comes back from the pageant later. Dorothy and Sophia came in second. But still be Gladys Goldfine. She couldn’t remember the lyrics to the song.
