Summary:
Sophia reads Dorothy part of a letter. It’s a love letter from one of Blanche’s prison inmate correspondents. Blanche enjoys bringing some joy to inmates. Mary comes to visit. She’s in high school. Sophia comes in, takes one look at Mary, and asks when the baby is due. Mary confirms she is pregnant and her father has thrown her out. They invite her to stay with them for the time being. Sophia says her fathers dog Samson is much meaner than Mary’s dad. The dog ate one of her friends. Later, Blanche is freaked out. Merrill, her inmate penpal, is getting out of prison and coming to see her. Dorothy tucks Mary into bed and this discuss her mothers illness and death and how she feels safe at their house. Meanwhile, Sophia is hiding all the valuables in preparation for Merrill’s visit. He arrives and we learn he didn’t write the letters, he just copied his cell mates letters. But he thinks Sophia is cute and that scares her. He’s told Blanche will be gone for a while and is not upset. He’ll wait. We learn that Merrill and Dorothy have a nickname in common, “moose.” Blanche, Rose and Mary come back. Blanche is instantly flirting with Merrill until Dorothy tells her who he is and that Blanche is off on a trip for several weeks. They all discuss Blanche in a negative light until Blanche’s ego can’t take anymore. She snaps and goes on about how beautiful she is. Merrill is still interested. He’ll come back later. Blanche packs up and hide from Merrill. They decide to sign Mary up for some natural childbirth classes. But they also discuss the amount of responsibility they will be taking on caring for a pregnant teenager. Dorothy can’t get Mary’s father to respond. Sophia and Dorothy go visit Fred. Sophia tries to talk to him, but leaves rather quickly as she thinks the dog wants to eat her. Dorothy then tells Fred a St. Olaf story. This gets through to him somehow. Blanche finally goes back to the house. As they all come home they find they’ve been robbed and Sophia is tied up. Merrill did it. They free Sophia. She tells them what happened. Fred comes over. He makes up with Mary and takes her home. But he also thanked for the St. Olaf story. The timing could not be worse as Rose had said she was going to stop telling them. Now she is going to tell more of them.
