Favorite Quotes:

+Blanche: Well, Dorothy Zbornak, are you implying I’m not pullin’ my weight?
Dorothy: That’s between you and the laws of physics.

+Sophia: Pussycat, I have another hypothetical question. Let’s say a man is interested in you.
Dorothy: This isn’t gonna stop until one of us dies, is it?
Sophia: No.

+Blanche: I loved her, and I thought she loved me. And then one day, when I was ten years old, she left – no goodbyes, no explanation. Just disappeared. I was devastated.

+Blanche: Let me get this right. I don’t hear from you for years and years, then out of the blue I get a phone call, and you come waltzing through that door and want me to give you a music box?

+Blanche: Oh, Dorothy. Dear, sweet, delusional Dorothy.
Dorothy: Blanche, if you don’t mind, I’m having a heart-to-heart with my mother. Now listen up, you withered old Sicilian monkey…

+Mammy Watkins: No, I mean I loved your father.
Blanche: Get outta here.
Mammy Watkins: We were lovers, Blanche.
Blanche: That’s impossible. Big Daddy was a Republican.

+Rose: Every time you need to talk to somebody, you go to your mother or to Blanche. Why doesn’t anybody ever talk to me?
Dorothy: Your advice always comes with one of those damn St. Olaf stories.
Rose: I can give advice without a damn St. Olaf story.

+Dorothy: Rose, you’re headed for a meltdown. Now make a point, any point.
Rose: The point of the story – actually, two of the stories – is that you let your pride get in the way too often. The only reason your mother did what she did was she didn’t want you to be lonely.

+Dorothy: I am happy. Look, Ma, I know that you think there’s something missing from my life, but there isn’t. If the right person comes along, great, but I don’t need a man to be happy.
Sophia: I didn’t realize that about you. On Mrs. Contini’s questionnaire, there’s a box about that.

Summary

Sophia asks Dorothy a question about a dating preference. She wants to fix Dorothy up with someone so she doesn’t feel like she has to babysit her. She’s hired a matchmaker for Dorothy without her consent. Meanwhile, Blanche takes a call. It’s from Viola Watkins. She used to be Blanche’s mammy. She will be in town for a few days and would like to visit. Blanche tells them she is shocked to hear from her. She disappeared in the middle of the night never to be heard from again. Blanche’s heart was broken by her mammy leaving like that. Then Rose talks about her nanny when she was a kid. This was a goat though. It’s another day and the doorbell rings. It’s Mammy Watkins. She asks for a hug, but Blanche does not give her one. Rose does instead. Mammy is not impressed. Blanches introduces everyone. Mammy gives Blanche her condolences about her fathers passing. She asks Blanche to give her a music box. She gave it to Blanche’s father. Blanche refuses and throws her out. Meanwhile, Dorothy’s matchmaker date shows up. He starts saying things that don’t add up. She starts asking questions. She gets back and confronts Sophia. The doorbell rings again and its Mammy Watkins. Blanche is not happy to see her again. She forces Blanche to listen to her. She informs Blanche that she was in love with her father and they were having an affair. She gives Blanche love letters that she and Big Daddy wrote to each other. Rose finds a picture of Blanche’s parents. Dorothy and Sophia are barely speaking. Rose tells a St. Olaf story to try and diffuse the situation. Blanche no longer feels the same about her father. Then they talk about their parents sex lives. Another day and Dorothy is looking for someone to talk to. She skips Rose as she wants to avoid a St. Olaf story. Rose tries to give advice without a St. Olaf story, but it fails. She tries doing two St. Olaf stories at once. But her point was that Sophia doesn’t want Dorothy to be lonely. Sophia and Dorothy talk. Sophia thinks Dorothy is not happy because she doesn’t have someone. Dorothy tells her she is happy. Blanche comes in with the letters talking about a barbeque. She plans to burn up the letters. Dorothy advises her to talk to Mammy Watkins. She does come over again to speak with Blanche. She explains that they were in love. Blanche nearly faints when Mammy refers to her father as Curtis instead of Big Daddy. Blanche finally confronts her about how she left. She had to leave because Blanche’s mother found out about the affair. She then rattles off a list of Blanche’s life events that she attended but remained hidden in the background so as to not make a scene. Blanche then decides to give her the music box. However, it’s not the right music box. Mammy Watkins wants to know where this music box came from. Blanche has no answer.
