Favorite Quotes:
+Sophia: Of all the things you could have inherited from your father, you had to pick this damn gambling disease.+Sophia Dorothy, I spent too many years denying your father’s addiction. He was a gambler to his dying day. In fact, his last words were, “10 bucks says I don’t need this oxygen tank.”
+Dorothy: I know it’s a lot of added responsibility, but I really want this job.
Sophia: Then why are you reading the racing form?
Dorothy: The racing form? Why would you think I’m reading the racing form?
Sophia: You can’t lie to your mother. Mothers always know when you lie.
+Sophia: Dorothy, it’s happening again. You’re losing control.
+Sophia: I’m being dramatic, you moron. I mean, I spit at the name Dorothy. I have no daughter. I have no spit.
+Sophia: I can hardly see my own hand in front of my face.
Blanche: That’s my hand, Sophia.
Sophia: Oh, thank God. I saw so many liver spots, I thought I was being attacked by a Dalmatian.
+Sophia: Oh, forgive me. I’m supposed to support your vain, narcissistic fantasy that you’re still in your forties.
Blanche: It’s either that or a big rent raise.
+Dorothy: Don’t you see? I’m stealing your money.
Rose: I know, Dorothy. But I was hoping you’d have a hard time taking advantage of somebody who cares about you as much as I do.
Dorothy: I need help, Rose.
+Dorothy: Ah, you’re never really cured, Rose. You just have to learn to live each day just one day at a time.
Rose: Well, of course you do, Dorothy. If you took them two at a time you’d end up constantly changing your underwear.
+Blanche: Well, I’ve decided to take Rose’s advice. I’m playing hard to get, like that little possum in your story.
Rose: Did I mention the part where you hang upside down from the tree?
Blanche: I can do that.
Summary:
Sophia is making improvements on Dorothy’s resume for Vice Principal. Blanche has the hots for the new curator at her museum. Rose is painting a picture but is having trouble because she can’t clearly remember what a horse looks like. Blanche suggests going to the horse races to see a horse (and jockeys). Dorothy gets stuck taking Rose to the track even though she clearly does not want to. They come back and Sophia learns they went to the track. Sophia wants to speak to Dorothy. Sophia reveals that Dorothy had a gambling problem 15 years ago. The doorbell rings and its Donald (the man at Blanche’s job she has the hots for). Rose asks Blanche to look at her painting before she leaves. Blanche does and so does Donald. Donald likes her paintings. He tells her when she finishes the series he will display them in the museum in a special section. Dorothy is studying for her interview. But Sophia points out she’s reading the racing form. Rose says good night to all. Blanche comes back upset. She tried to seduce him and he turned her down. The next day, Dorothy calls to reschedule her interview. Then she goes to the track. She places a bet on a horse called “ma’s mouth.” Meanwhile, Rose hits a snag in her paintings with her final season Autumn. Blanche has been refusing to go to work. Sophia confronts Dorothy about her gambling addiction relapse. She gives her a lecture. Blanche also expresses her concern for Dorothy a little later in the kitchen. Dorothy explains she had a gambling problem 15 years ago. Rose continues trying to complete her art series. Blanche tells her to disappoint him since he disappointed her. Rose suggests to Blanche that she may have been too direct. Rose suggests that she play hard to get. Sophia asks Blanche to take her to the eye doctor. She informs her she no longer views Dorothy as her daughter. Blanche doesn’t want to take her to the eye doctor. Meanwhile, Dorothy calls in another bet. Her bookie asks about what she already owes. She puts him off. Later that night everyone is in the kitchen except Dorothy. Sophia expresses her worry about Dorothy and her gambling problem. She tells them what happened the last time. Dorothy went into so much debt she went to loan sharks. They had to cash out Sal’s life insurance policy or she would have lost her house. She made Dorothy agree to get help. Dorothy gets a call from her bookie…he wants cash. Rose asks her to look at her painting but she doesn’t know what it is. Rose and Dorothy have a conversation about obsession. And Dorothy lies to her to borrow money. Rose agrees but then lays a very clever blanket of guilt on Dorothy. Dorothy tells her she shouldn’t trust anyone completely as people lie. Rose tells her they are like sisters. It finally breaks Dorothy and she admits that she needs help. Another day and Dorothy tells them she has gone back to Gamblers Anonymous for help and support with her gambling problem. Blanche has finally gone back to work. Apparently, Donald has a rule about not dating employees. He quit the job to date Blanche.
