Favorite Quotes:

* Dorothy: Oh, morning, Ma. You sleep OK?
Sophia: No. I got up in the middle of the night and there was a puddle in my bed. Do you know how relieved I was to find out the roof was leaking?

* Dorothy: Look, Ma, I think I look pretty damn good tonight. Is it really necessary for you to constantly put me down?
Sophia: I’m sorry, pussycat. You’re right. From now on I’m gonna be a more supportive mother. You look nice tonight.

* Jasper DeKimmel: You’re idiots. The only humor here is my own, at your great stupidity. This picture no more echoes Monet than any of you echo a beauty queen. And you will waste no more of my time.

* Dorothy: Ma, please, for the hundredth time, Shady Pines was a beautiful retirement village.
Sophia: Sure, sure. And Attica’s known for its topnotch tennis facilities.

* Dorothy: Ma, we got it. We own a DeKimmel. Even though he was a terrible man, I feel guilty. Find out where we send flowers.
Sophia: Send flowers to yourself. The yutz is gonna make it.

Summary:

The roof has been leaking for a while. Blanche has not had it fixed yet. She comes in stating she has called the repairman as the roof caved in on her last night. The repairman arrives and tells them it’s $10,000 for a new roof. The girls are horrified as they don’t have that kind of money. A patch job is just a few hundred. Sophia heads off to the hospital as it’s her day to volunteer. She’s keeping an eye out for a doctor for Dorothy (to date). Blanche invites them to an art show that evening. Jasper DeKimmel is the featured artist. She shows them one of his pieces in the brochure and tries to explain what it all means, but Rose has altered the image with a creamsicle. They are now at the auction where everyone looks splendid. Dorothy calls Sophia out for how she treats her. As they look at some of the artist’s work he approaches and speaks with them. He leads them on and then gets angry when they are incorrect about his work. Rose thinks she sees two mimes and distracts them. They are actually workers carrying glass and the glass gets broken. Another day back at the house and there is more water leaking from the roof. The patch job did not help. They decide to cash out as much as they can to pay up front for a new roof and make payments on the rest. Sophia comes back and informs them that the artist DiKimmel is dying. Blanche reminds them that some of his work is being auctioned and when he dies the value will go up. They all decide to go to the auction. The night before none of them sleep well and they all wake up. They are feeling a bit of guilt for taking advantage of the situation. They do get a piece but wind up paying more because Rose bid against them driving the price up. They wind up paying $9,000 for it. Dorothy calls Sophia and gets the news that DeKimmel is not dying. He got a blood transfusion (from Sophia). Dorothy faints. It’s now the day of the new roof and they have no idea how they will pay for it now. The roofer sees the painting and mentions he loves the artist and would love an original by him. Sophia begins to negotiate the roof and the painting.
