Original Air Date: October 21, 1989
Favorite Quotes:
* Sophia: You know, there’s an old Italian saying for times like this: “Scapa, tu si mal fortuna.”Rose: What does that mean?
Sophia: Get away from me, you’re bad luck.
* Sophia: Please, I’m way ahead of you. I bought half pink, half blue, so after I’m gone, you and your brother Phil won’t fight to see who gets them.
Dorothy: So that’s what it feels like to be an heiress.
* Rose: Oh, I found one job I wanted. I would have been perfect for it, but they told me I was too old.
* Blanche: I always assumed I’d be kept by a younger man.
Dorothy: It’s not too late. They get younger every day.
* Rose: I’d be perfect for this job. You see, I am the battered consumer. I drive a Gremlin, for God’s sake.
* Dorothy: I don’t know whether I wanna use this. It says it’s gonna hurt.
Rose: Well, you can try it on your right leg and then use the hot wax on your left one.
Dorothy: Why don’t we just set each other on fire?
* Sophia: In my village, hairy legs were a sign of beauty.
Blanche: How do you account for that?
Sophia: Dumb men, hairy women.
Summary:
Sophia has joined the Shoppers Warehouse. She’s excited about a sale for adult diapers. Rose gets a letter in the mail. The company Charlie worked for has gone bankrupt and so has the pension fun. She will no longer get those checks which she depends on for survival. The girls try to reassure her everything will be fine. They advise her to call tomorrow to find out what is really going on. The next day she calls and it’s bad news. No more pension payments. Rose starts looking for a new job. Sophia comes back from the Shoppers Warehouse with several boxes of toothbrushes. Rose is still looking for a job. She talks about how Charlie took this job at the horseshoe company because he would leave Rose a pension. Now she has to figure out what to do. The girls suggest calling the consumer reporter from channel 8 for help. Sophia tells her to dress youthfully while job hunting as its hard for older women to get jobs. Another day and Sophia asks Dorothy for $20 she wants to buy tube socks at the Shoppers Warehouse. Rose returns. She didn’t have any luck finding a job. There was one she wanted, assistant manager at a pet shop, but they told her she was too old. This is age discrimination. Now she can call Enrique Mas, because this is illegal. Rose continues to be sad, as she and Charlie had worked hard to make sure she would be taken care of in retirement. Now she just has a few months. Dorothy talks about how she thought Stan would take care of her, but he sells plastic poop. Blanche thought she would find a younger man to take care of her. Rose talks about the bag lady she sees every day. She always thought she did something to be homeless, but now she might be in her situation and she did nothing to wind up that way. Rose makes an appointment to see Enrique Mas but winds up meeting with his assistant instead. She also learns that Enrique is hiring for an assistant. She asks about applying but he says she is too old. He finally gives her a chance. Rose enlists the girls to help with her test. It’s hair removal products. They sit around the table and eat cheesecake. They tell stories about their first experiences removing hair. It’s another day and Rose is taking a while at her interview. She comes back and tells them she got the job. Her next assignment is comparing artificial sweeteners.
