Original Air Date: September 30, 1989

Favorite Quotes:

* Dr. Harry Weston: Just because a doctor hasn’t found something doesn’t mean there isn’t something there.

* Dorothy: Harry, am I gonna die?
Harry: I’m afraid so.
Dorothy: Do you really think so?
Harry: Sooner or later, I guarantee it.

* Rose: I’m making omelets for us without yolk so we don’t get too much cholesterol. That leaves these yolks, which I hate to throw out, so I thought we’d give them to the homeless.

* Blanche: Your heart’s in the right place, Rose, but I don’t know where your brain is.

* Blanche: My God, I’m hallucinating. I see little balls of sunshine in a bag. Does this mean something?
Rose: Those are egg yolks, Blanche.
Blanche: My brain’s gone. My body is limp with exhaustion.

* Blanche: This is why Hollywood won’t get it either. I will not have my words coming out of Glenn Close’s mouth.

* Blanche: Tell me a story, Rose. That always puts me to sleep. It works every time. Just tell me one of your boring stories.

* Dr. Chang: You’ve seen some wonderful doctors, but I really can’t agree with their findings. There are new diseases arising all the time – things we don’t necessarily have tests for – but that doesn’t mean the diseases don’t exist.

* Blanche: Oh, I’m so upset. I put everything into this, Rose, all of me, I held nothing back. Then to have some snotnosed little kid from Harvard send me a form letter, oh! I’m so mad I could scream.
(screams)
Rose: That’s the first time I ever heard anybody say “I’m so mad I could scream” and actually do it.

* Dorothy: I suspect, had I been a man, I might have been taken a little bit more seriously and not told to go to a hairdresser.
Dr. Budd: Look, I am not going to sit here anymore–
Mrs. Budd: Shut up, Lewis.

* Dorothy: Someday, Dr. Budd, you’re gonna be on the other side of the table, and as angry as I am, and as angry as I always will be, I still wish you a better doctor than you were to me.

Summary:

Dorothy goes to see her neighbor Dr. Harry Weston to get his thoughts on her health. He tells her that just because something hasn’t been found does not mean something isn’t there. He tells her she is not crazy. He refers to virologist Michael Chang. Another morning, Blanche finds Rose making omelets with just the whites of the eggs. She feels bad about wasting the yolks and thinks the homeless might like them. Blanche thinks she is crazy. Dorothy joins them and they are surprised at how good she looks. She has an appointment with Dr. Chang today. Now they notice how terrible Blanche looks. She has been awake for 72 hours straight writing her novel. She sees the bag of egg yolks and confuses it with suns. Dorothy and Sophia leave to go meet the doctor. Blanche insists on Rose reading some of her book. It makes no sense to Rose. When she tells Blanche, Blanche gets offended. At the doctors appointment Sophia is nervous and upset and starts praising Chinese people. Dorothy gets upset at Sophia, but Dr. Chang is kind and patient. He finishes reading all reports and tells her that he disagrees with the previous doctors as new diseases are discovered all the time. He diagnoses her with Chronic Fatique Syndrome. It’s a virus that doesn’t have a cure yet. Sometimes it goes away and sometimes it stays with you much longer. He gives her paperwork for some more blood tests. He instructs her to rest when needed, eat well, and eliminate stress. They leave. At the house, Blanche’s rejection letters for her book are piling up and causing her a lot of distress. She winds up screaming in anger and frustration. Her looks have always made her special, but she wants something else that makes her special too. Blanche then goes on the attack against Rose and where she grew up. She gives back to Blanche just as good as Blanche gave to her, leaving her shocked. Another evening and the girls have all gone out to dinner at a fancy restaurant to celebrate Dorothy’s diagnosis. They order champagne (only Rose realizes how expensive it is) and begin to celebrate. When the cost of the bubbly is discovered Sophia adds salt to her glass and yells for the waiter. They get the entire meal for free. Meanwhile, Dorothy spots Dr. Budd at another table. She goes to talk with him. He tries to dismiss her and his wife won’t stand for it. Dorothy says her piece and then goes back to her table with the girls.
