Favorite Quotes:
+Sophia: Well, I’m all set. What’s with Satan’s secretary?Blanche: Sophia, I believe Phil would have liked this dress.
Sophia: Liked it? He would have looked great in it.
+Sophia: Oh, God, he looks like he died in a Benny Hill sketch.
+Angela: Phil had great taste. That’s one of the things I loved about him the most from the beginning. His sense of style. We were married for 26 years and my family still talks about that wedding dress. God, I wish I could wear a plunging neckline like that.
+Rose: I think you haven’t cried because you haven’t accepted his death yet.
Sophia: Thank you. I’ve never been psychoanalyzed by a dipstick before.
+Angela: Maybe I could show Blanche how to correctly apply her makeup.
Dorothy: I’d like that.
Angela: Although she might be offended if I bring it up.
Dorothy: That’s the part I like.
+Dorothy: Hi, Ma. Did you have a nice walk?
Sophia: Yeah.
Dorothy: Ma, where’d you get the skateboard?
Sophia: Oh, yeah. I guess there’s some kid at the park with an umbrella.
+Dorothy: My mother wants to apologize.
Angela: Then why didn’t she come in?
Dorothy: She’s shy.
Angela: Sophia is shy?
Dorothy: In an obnoxious sort of way. Look, Angela, I have to get you and Ma to end this. Not for you, not for me. For Phil. I realize now that I was wrong not doing it while he was still alive. Now, come on, Angela, take the first step.
+Dorothy: Ma, you know, when I think of Phil, you know what I think of? His capacity to love. You know, no matter what anyone did to Phil, he always gave back love.
+Sophia: But every time I saw him I always wondered what I did, what I said, when was the day that I did whatever I did to make him the way he was.
Angela: What he was, Sophia, was a good man.
Sophia: My baby is gone.
Angela: Oh, Sophia.
Summary:
Dorothy is nervous. Her brother Phil has died and she has to give the eulogy at his funeral. Rose tells her about a funeral she spoke at, but didn’t know the person. It’s awkward. Blanche joins them in a red dress. She wears red, not black to funerals. They are all worried about Sophia and how she is handling Phil’s death. He had a heart attack. Sophia is very bothered by cross dressing. Sophia then asks if Big Sally is coming. This is Phil’s wife, but her name is Angela. Sophia and Angela have had an ongoing feud for over 20 years. They are now at the funeral. Phil is in an open casket and wearing a black teddy. Sophia can’t go up to the casket. Angela is upset about the funeral being in Miami instead of Newark. The priest doesn’t know Phil and she’s worried the funeral won’t go well. Sophia is upset that he’s not in a suit. But Sally respected Phil’s wishes. Rose tries to help Sophia with her grief. They are suspicious of a trio that arrives at the burial. It turns out they are Phil’s poker buddies. Dorothy asks Angela to stay for a few days, but she just got promoted and has to head back. She will come over for the afternoon though. She is going to offer to help Blanche with her makeup. But now Dorothy speaks at the burial. And her tribute is moving. Back at the house, they look at pictures and share stories about Phil. Dorothy gets Sophia and Angela to go for a meal together. Instead, everything comes out. How Phil was hurt that he couldn’t spend holidays with his family. That his family wouldn’t come to his home. The grandkids missing out on their grandma. Sophia’s attitude was all because of a dowry check that bounced. $47 is why she cut them all off. Out of frustration and anger Angela gives her $47. Angela prepares to head home. Dorothy tries to make the two talk. It doesn’t go well. Rose steps in with all her experience from grief counseling. The dress thing is what has always bothered Sophia. She hoped that Angela would stop it and she didn’t. She felt ashamed because of it. Rose tells a St. Olaf story that is surprisingly on point. Sophia has always worried it was something she did that caused Phil to be different. Angela points out that he was a good man.
