Favorite Quotes:

* Blanche: I don’t care about chickens, Rose. She didn’t call me “Chicken,” she called me “Peacock.”
Rose: You look more like a chicken. When you’re angry, your neck sticks out like a chicken.

* Blanche: Oh, girls, it’s gonna be so exciting. I am gonna make a fortune. And I won’t even have to use my imagination. My life is a romance novel.
Sophia: Your life is a sports page.

* Blanche: Though, of course, my heroine doesn’t look like you. This is a romantic novel, not science fiction.

* Dorothy: I said she was comforting. I didn’t say she was smart.

* Sophia: Dorothy could be dying, and they just don’t know it.

Summary:

Blanche tells Rose that her mother called her peacock as a child because she was so beautiful. Rose points out she looks more like a chicken when she is angry. She goes on to talk about her destiny and becoming a great writer. She reads them a small section of a romance novel and says she can do better than that. Dorothy enters and is upset. They ask what is wrong. She tells them she tried to teach a class today and was so tired she was too tired to speak. They discuss her symptoms and all the doctors she has gone to now. They have not found anything. They all get into a small argument over how she feels and how she looks. Now Blanche’s heroine in her novel will be sick as well. Dorothy goes to see another doctor. He’s more concerned with a patient he just saw than Dorothy and her health. He “politely” tells her it’s all in her head. She tells him again all of her symptoms. He clearly doesn’t care. He just asks about her social life. He refers her to the doctor he trained under, a neurologist named Dr. Budd. Sophia joins them, worried. When the doctor tells her the diagnosis she is furious. Later, they are all back at the house barbequing on the lanai. Rose is going to go with Dorothy to New York to see this doctor. Blanche is upset that she doesn’t get to go to New York. Blanche tells her she used to be a candy stripper to try and get included on the trip, but to no avail. Dorothy is now at Dr. Budd’s office. He asks her a few questions and then begins to insult her and tell her she is wasting his time. He tells her to go to the hair salon and have her hair done as the cure. Back at the hotel, Rose is confused by the price of room service. Dorothy arrives back, more depressed than before. She tries to cheer Dorothy up by telling her about her observations of New York. Dorothy breaks down and cries. Rose continues trying to cheer her up. They return back to the house from their trip. Rose then tells her a St. Olaf story. It makes everyone angry. Sophia gives a pained speech about all the death she has seen and voices her concern that Dorothy could be dying and no one realizes it.
