* Blanche: Sophia, honey, you can’t just sell my house. Is this in dollars?Sophia: No, it’s in cucumber rolls. Of course it’s in dollars.
* Blanche: Oh, honey, it just means that sometimes you tend to be a bit naive, simple, childlike.
Sophia: She’s calling you a moron. You don’t want to live with a woman like that. Tell her to sell the house.
* Blanche: Mmm, terrific little figure, gorgeous hair, perfect skin. Just like looking in a mirror.
Sophia: Get some Windex.
* Blanche: Now, if I could just manage to rope myself a doctor that easily.
Dorothy: Honey, I don’t think there’s enough sugar left in the bowl.
* Dorothy: So one might say you brought geflurkenurken into the ’80s?
Rose: Yes, but I’m not one to blow my own vertubenflugen.
* Sophia: You know, I never thought I’d say this, but I think Rose got the brains in that family.
* Blanche: The bottom line is, if you take a chance in life, sometimes good things happen, sometimes bad things happen. But, honey, if you don’t take a chance, nothing happens.
* Blanche: I’m gonna have to meet men lying down.
Sophia: I thought you did.
* Sophia: You’ll get over it, Dorothy. And if you don’t, who cares? I’m on my way to see Burt Reynolds.
* Sophia: Oh, Cinderella’s back from the ball and her three wicked roommates are jealous.
Summary:
The ladies have just come back from a dinner theater. They find Sophia giving a stranger a tour of the house. Blanche is upset by what is going on. When she sees the price he offers she is shocked. The neighbor kids put a for sale sign in front of the house. Blanche is not sure what to do, it’s a lot of money. Blanche tells the story of how she met Rose. She put a notice on the board at the supermarket. Rose walked over to look at the board with a cat in her arms. It’s a stray she found and she is being evicted because her apartment does not allow cats. She converses with Blanche about seeing the room for rent. When she steps away a child approaches her about the cat. She gives it to him. Next we see that Rose has moved in already and Dorothy arrives with her boxes. There is confusion over who gets what room. They flip a coin to decide. They are shocked to realize they’ve been together for five years now. They talk about a dance marathon they all competed in. Early on Rose tries to tell a St. Olaf story and the girls cry foul. They liven it up and each do a solo, but Rose throws in cartwheels shocking the entire crowd. They have finished a cheesecake by the time this story is over and still no solution to this dilemma. Sophia tries again to convince Blanche to sell. She can buy something bigger and better for all of them. But Blanche says she may want to travel and visit relatives she doesn’t see often. Sophia points out that many family members come there to visit. The first one is Uncle Angelo when he came to visit and though Dorothy and Stan were still married and it was their anniversary. But a hurricane hit and all were trapped in the house. Rose and Blanche came home dressed as nuns because they were at a rehearsal for The Sound of Music. Next is the story of Lucy’s visit for school, but instead she goes on a lot of dates with a lot of different men. Blanche wishes she could get that many men that easily and quickly. Next, Aunt Angela is visiting. They convince her to move back to Miami to be closer to Sophia. Next, is Rose’s cousin Sven’s visit. Stan interrupts the stroll down memory lane. He wants to borrow a car. He’s in the pizza business now and broke his car doing pizza deliveries. He’d prefer the girls be the pizza delivery drivers though. They tell him they might sell the house and he gets upset. He then tells a story about when he stayed at the house and talks about their honeymoon. After this Blanche decides not to sell the house. However, the phone rings and it’s Yakamura, he has doubled his offer. Blanche now accepts. Another day and everyone is upset over Blanche deciding to sell the house. Blanche surprises them all and asks for their advice. They start telling stories again. First Rose asks advice about a cruise with Arnie. She is nervous because Charlie is the only man she has ever been with. Then they discuss what each did when they lost or divorced their husbands. Another day, and they are still stressed out. They share more memories. They discuss the tap dancing act, Sophia’s medicare song, the chicken that Rose chickensat for, the song they wrote for a contest “Miami, Miami” Then they remember meeting Burt Reynolds. Next they talk about when Rose put an ad in the personals’ section for Dorothy instead of the looking for work sections. But being in the personals section creates quite a scandal. Then they remember Fernando the Teddy Bear and that horrible Sunshine Cadet who held him for ransom. Blanche finally decides that yes she is going to sell the house. She had not fully decided yet. When she calls Yakamura she learns that he went on a shopping spree and bought several buildings and businesses, he doesn’t have anything left to buy her house with. They are staying.
