Favorite Quotes:
* Blanche: Girls, you are my very best friends in the entire world, and I trust and respect you more than any people I know. So I want you to tell me the truth. Now, honestly, do you think I’m competent at what I do?Dorothy: Based on the sounds from your bedroom, I’d bet you’re damn near spectacular.
* Blanche: Then why is my boss constantly looking over my shoulder?
Dorothy: I would guess a plunging neckline and a push-up bra.
* Dorothy: You let Ma leave the house with $3,000 of our money?
Rose: What’s wrong with that?
Dorothy: What’s wrong?! Odds are she’ll probably come back with a handful of magic beans!
* Dorothy: Ma, you bought a prizefighter?
Sophia: It’s a once-in-a-lifetime investment. A week from now, you’re gonna be kissing the ground I walk on.
Dorothy: You’re gonna be looking up at it from the other side.
* Dorothy: Everything is on the up and up. He does have a fight scheduled. All we have to do is hire a cut man, but I can probably do that on my way back from the dry cleaner’s. Gee, it sounds so natural, doesn’t it?
* Rose: I might be able to help Pepe, too.
Sophia: You can be a constant reminder of what might happen if you spar without headgear.
* Blanche: Going to Notre Dame would put such a wrench in our relationship, with all those priests skulking about the campus.
Summary:
Blanche asks the girls if they think she is competent at what she does. They think she is talking about in the bedroom but she is actually talking about her job at work. Dorothy points out that she has worked at the museum for 5 years and they would not have kept her that long if didn’t do a good job. They all discuss money and investments. Rose was supposed to go to the bank and purchase a CD. However, she had to go to work early and asked Sophia to go for her. Dorothy freaks out, fearing the money is lost forever. Sophia returns to the house, with a boxer in tow (a fighter, not the dog). Dorothy is furious. Sophia explains that he has a fight this Friday and that it’s a guaranteed purse. He gets $10,000 even if he loses, which means they will get their money back plus some extra. No one is happy. They decide that for the time being all they can do is wait. They will make calls and verify the fight as soon as they can. Dorothy is able to confirm that he does have an upcoming fight scheduled. Later, Sophia surprises the girls by telling them if Pepe wins then the winnings are doubled. It’ll be $20,000. Everyone pitches in to train him. It’s the night before the fight and Dorothy is having trouble sleeping. Sophia tells her a story. A trip she and a friend took. The friend went to the United States and she went to Sardinia. The other became successful while Sophia did not. As Sophia continues to try and calm Dorothy down, Rose bursts in and tells them Kid Pepe is gone. After going through Pepe’s things they find an address. They find him at the address playing a violin. He tells them about Juilliard and that the prize money is to pay for college. The teacher does not want him to fight. But the girls don’t want to lose their money either. Pepe doesn’t want to risk not having money for school. The fight is about to begin. They tell him to throw the fight. Don’t throw a punch, get hit and go down and stay down. He takes a head punch and is knocked out. The next day is his audition. He doesn’t remember how to play the violin. The girls think quickly and trigger his speech from when they found out what was really going on. It’s so good he gets accepted to their acting school instead of the music school.
