Summary:
One of Sophia’s friends has died. She just returned from the funeral with Dorothy. The three discuss life and death. Sophia is the oldest and they all worry how much time they have left with her. Blanche tells them her life philosophy and then Rose tells them a St. Olaf story. The story inspires Dorothy to take Sophia somewhere for a weekend. When she brings up the idea to Sophia, she freaks out. She thinks it’s another trick to put her back in Shady Pines. She demands a trip to Disney World instead. Dorothy agrees. Sophia is still suspicious. The day of the trip arrives. Sophia, still suspicious, calls the airlines to confirm the flight and find out if there is anything extra. When she determines all is well, she is excited. They head off. Blanche has been inspired by Rose’s Toonder the Tiger story. She has been doodling and sketching. She thinks they should write a kids book. At the hotel, Sophia is getting ready to go to the park but Dorothy wants to talk about old times and old photos. Back at the house, Blanche and Rose are really making progress on the Toonder the Tiger book. The two fight over small details. At the hotel, Dorothy is still strolling down Memory Lane and Sophia just wants to go to the park. However, there is a major storm and they are stuck in the hotel. Sophia can’t take it anymore and goes to the bar. Dorothy finds her and is upset. Sophia is upset too. She wanted to have fun, not a depressing trip that makes her feel like death is near. Sophia tells her about lightning bugs when she was a kid. She would catch them in a jar to see them light up and they would die. She didn’t put holes for air and they suffocated to death. This is what Dorothy is doing to her right now. They talk and make up. Back at the house, Blanche apologizes to Rose. Rose accepts and then tells her this is not going to be a book. It turns out her parents didn’t make up the stories, they got them from a book. Her sister broke the news when she called for more stories. Rose tells her short poem to cheer her up. Blanche likes it. Now she wants to do greeting cards with her drawings and Rose’s poems. Back at the hotel, the weather finally improves. Dorothy and Sophia ride Space Mountain.
